Why Factions Exist
The world was in war, and the people decided that the cause of the warring and constant turmoil was from five different natures of man: aggression, ignorance, duplicity, selfishness, and cowardice.
It was then that they decided to separate people into groups with qualities that would directly eradicate these specific natures of man.
"Those who blamed aggression formed Amity."
"Those who blamed ignorance became the Erudite."
"Those who blamed duplicity created Candor."
"Those who blamed selfishness made Abnegation."
"And those who blamed cowardice were the Dauntless."
The city is even more afraid of being factionless than they are of death.
The Types
Abnegation
values: selflessness
appearance: grey clothes, plain hairstyle, only "adornment Abnegation allows"--because it's
practical
what they do: provide selfless leaders in government
only allows mirrors on haircut day
generally, curiosity and sarcasm go against the Abnegation values
simplicity is practiced to help them forget themselves and protect themselves from selfishness--
including vanity, greed, and envy
Candor
values: honesty
appearance: standard uniform is a black suit with a white tie
what they do: trustworthy leaders in law
Erudite
values: knowledge
what they do: intelligent teachers and researchers
Amity
values: friendship, kindness, getting along
appearance: yellow and red clothing
what they do: understanding counselors and caretakers
Dauntless
values: courage
appearance: tattoos, piercings, black clothing
what they do: provides us with protection from threats both within and without, they guard the fence surrounding the city
the existence of elderly Dauntless is questionable--where do they go when that can't jump off moving trains anymore?
*School is the only place where the children of different factions mix.

Leaving the Abnegation Faction is very rare, and is remembered if it does happen.
